Exploring regenerative grazing opportunities in Piauí 🇧🇷

At the end of May, Juan Pedro Scremini Ortiz de Taranco travelled to Piauí, a state in northeastern Brazil with strong potential for regenerative livestock and agricultural development. He spent several days on the ground, meeting producers, walking farms, and gathering insights as we explore launching a pilot project in the region.

Juan Pedro focused on two key areas. In the north, around Capitão de Campos, he visited farms with flat, accessible land and reliable groundwater. In the south, near Bom Jesus, he explored properties with more developed infrastructure and steeper terrain, where land-use strategies need to be adapted to the topography.

Throughout the trip, he analysed how the region’s distinct wet and dry seasons shape production decisions. He noted that most rainfall falls between December and May, which creates clear windows for planting and pasture renewal. He saw that soils are naturally rich but acidic, and typically require correction. He confirmed that, managed properly, they can support productive pastures with minimal synthetic inputs.

Juan Pedro also assessed water resources. At one property, he measured a borehole yielding over 60,000 litres per hour, more than enough for efficient regenerative grazing. Through conversations with local farmers, he identified labour as the main constraint, with social shifts and rural-to-urban migration reducing the availability of skilled agricultural workers.

He observed full-cycle livestock operations using adapted breeds such as Nelore, with crossbreeding efforts with Angus to improve meat quality. He saw many producers practising double cropping during the rainy season, and noted opportunities to add a third crop under irrigation.

Juan Pedro came away convinced that Piauí offers a clear opportunity for The Land Group’s entry into Brazil. At the same time, he flagged infrastructure gaps and labour shortages as challenges we will need to solve.

Obrigado, Raimundo Quaresma, for the hospitality. We will be back.
