Learning from the land: Gonçalo’s Uruguayan field notes

Last week, Gonçalo Pereira Miguel, who leads our Portuguese operations, visited The Land Group’s properties in Uruguay to gain first-hand insight into the opportunities and challenges across our local operations and to promote knowledge exchange between Portugal and Uruguay.
The contrasts with our projects in Portugal are striking and offer valuable opportunities for cross-learning.
Pasture and grazing - Our regenerative Adaptive Multi-Paddock grazing system in Uruguay supports full cattle cycles entirely on grass. This approach prioritises land health and long-term resilience, showing how regenerative grazing can combine productivity with environmental stewardship.
Livestock strategy - While producers in Portugal focus primarily on larger animals and market-driven breeds, our teams in Uruguay manage leaner herds, adapted to local conditions and optimised for the efficient use of natural resources. This model challenges conventional priorities by placing sustainability as a key dimension.
Agronomy with purpose - Direct seeding, strategic crop rotations and biodiversity preservation are central to our approach in Uruguay. The focus is not on maximising yields at any cost, but on maintaining a profitable balance between production and environmental integrity, in line with regenerative agriculture principles.
Gonçalo’s visit aimed to deepen his understanding of The Land Group’s Uruguayan operations and to identify practical solutions that can be adapted to our expanding international portfolio. He returned inspired by the resourcefulness and technical expertise of our Uruguayan teams and more determined than ever to strengthen the connections between regions.
