Symposium “Pastoralism in Transition"

November 23, 2024

Last week was intense for The Land Group!

We supported the symposium “Pastoralism in Transition: Exploring Intersections of Religious and Environmental Changes” and the roundtable “A Conversation on Mobile Pastoralism in Kenya and Mongolia,” organised by Joana Roque de Pinho in partnership with University of Lisbon, Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Instituto Superior de Agronomia, and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).

These events brought together international researchers studying pastoralism, including Batbuyan Batjav from Mongolia and three Maasai pastoralists - Richard Ole Supeet, Lenaai Ole Mowuo, and Stanley Ole Neboo - from Kenya. On the side of the main event, we organised visits to two farms in the Alentejo region, Herdade do Vale do Porco, with Diogo and Rodrigo Ribeiro da Cunha, and Herdade da Fonte do Prior, with Joaquim Mira.

Diogo, Rodrigo, and Joaquim have been farming regeneratively for a few years and have achieved impressive results with Adaptive Multi-Paddock Grazing, including more nutritious, diversified, drought-resistant pastures and reduced feed and health costs.

These visits facilitated a valuable exchange of ideas and experiences in livestock rearing spanning four continents - South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.Last but not least, we also introduced Batbuyan, Richard, Lenaai, and Stanley to Nazaré, where they experienced the thrill of its world-class big waves with Team Red Herrings.

To conclude the week, I presented The Land Group’s approach to regenerative agriculture at Web Summit.
